Catchin’ UP on STUFF

December 12th, 2008

Busy, busy…..that is always my response these days when someone asks how I’ve been. “Busy-Busy!”

After my whirlwind trip to Texas to visit my stepfather after his bypass and to be moral support for my brother, I found myself running ragged back here in Kansas.

For awhile, we had other personal issues seemed to take over our lives here, but things are getting a bit back to normal.

Basketball season has begun and we are on a constant run with associated activities. Hais actually won the free throw contest with 13/15 score, followed by an additional 2/5…total 17/20 at the large annual tournament that we play this time of the year. She will most likely get to compete for the overall title at the Championship game on Saturday against other the other winners from the alternate locations of the tournament. We lost last night, so we will be playing for 3rd/4th on Saturday.

At this time of the year, my Ebay sales take over that little bit of life I have outside of basketball. All of that will die down on the 21st, and then the new push will be to get ready for our meager Christmas. Hais will be in Texas for the first portion of her break from school, but I will meet her and other members of my family for a small celebration in Oklahoma City. OKC is a good half-way point for us all.

I have not had an opportunity to do one bit of holiday decorating here. Our town is having a decorating contest for the first time I have known…and I am not going to be able to participate. In a way, that makes me sad, but then I think about the energy I am saving, mine and that of the electric company, I feel a bit better. At some point though, I AM going to have to put up a tree. The norm in my house is to decorate at least four trees…in themes…but moderation is the word of the month here.

So how is your holiday season going so far?

Be Creative With Halloween Decorations!

I just stepped outside and took a deep breath and then another one and another one. No I don’t have a breathing problem or anything. It’s just that for the first time in months, I don’t feel like I’m breathing in an aquarium. The air is crisp and cool and that means fall is here and the humidity is gone!

At one point in our lives, that would have been the signal for us to haul out boxes and sacks full of Halloween decorations and go to work. It would usually take us at least a month to put everything out. We were one of those families who would put out a “monstrous” (Ha!Ha! No pun intended) display. We literally had hundreds of people drive by our home just to see our decorations. It really was a lot of work, especially because back then you couldn’t really buy much to use for outside Halloween decorations. We had to use our imagination and make our own.

We like to have fun at Halloween and not scare the wits out of everyone, so we try to keep our decorations cute and funny looking. To us, Halloween is a time for children to dress up and for one night a year be what they always dreamed of being, whether it’s a fairy princess, a ballerina, Superman or even a robot. They get to be on the “stage” for one night to show everyone how beautiful, strong or funny they look. And to end a perfect night they get tons of candy, bags of candy and did I mention, a whole bunch of candy??

Here are some ideas of things we did to have a whole lot of fun for very little money. You can use these same basic principles for any holiday decorating.

   1. You don’t have to have a lot of decorations for your display to look nice. I drive by one home every year and each season the owners put out one simple something. For example, in the summer they have one beautiful pot of flowers sitting on their porch. In the fall a pot of mums, for Halloween, one pumpkin with a smiley face and at Christmas one pretty lit up wreath on the door. It’s never a lot, but I always get pleasure when I drive by the place and see their one simple decoration.

   2. We work all year buying things at garage sales or thrift stores for our decorations. We started out with about 25 plastic pumpkins to set out for a pumpkin patch. The next year we added another 50 and drilled holes in the bottoms so we could put lights in them. After a few years we had 200-300 of them that we had collected. We never paid more then 5-10 cents for them. If you want to have a big display, start small and just add a little bit more to your decorations each year.

   3. Cute homemade decorations make Halloween fun! If you see something in a magazine or somewhere that you think is cute but too expensive, try to copy it and make it yourself:

          * I saw a cute rake in a magazine that I loved. It was an old rake that had a few silk flowers tied on it and a sign that said “Free leaves, rake all you want.” I just happened to have a dead 50 year old rake in my shed I was going to throw away, so I pulled it out, found an old board and some paint (I could have used a marker too), painted on the words and tied on a couple of stray silk flowers that I had and voila! I had a cute rake and saved about $25.

          * It takes nothing to stuff some old clothes with plastic bags and make a scarecrow family.

          * If you are a little handy, put your talent to good use. My husband took and old metal trash can and motorized it so that the lid moved up and down and when it opened it popped out a Sylvester the cat.

   4. We found decorations in unusual places. Once we went to the grocery store where they had a gigantic pumpkin. The thing was about 8-10 feet across. We asked the manager it they threw it out at the end of the season and he said no. We told him what we needed it for and discovered that he had seen our display and liked it. He said “Come by on Halloween morning and you can take it to use and then bring it back.” It doesn’t ever hurt to ask about anything. Most people aren’t mean and hateful, but are usually kind and helpful.

   5. Get more bang for your buck. Buy things that have a big impact but cost little. A couple of bags of spider webs and plastic spiders can cover a lot of area and look “cool” but cost very little. I use spider webs for everything. They’re great to use to cover throw pillows for a party, put in your hair, hang on the lights or wrap around the handles of silverware. You just can’t have too much.

   6. Use what you already have around the house.

          * We were having a Halloween party and to add to the effect, we dug out some black sheets and covered all the furniture. It changed the whole look of the room.

          * Another year, my husband found some 10 foot long, thin metal rods. We stuck them in the ground, added styrofoam wig heads to each one and hung some large pieces of sheer fabric I had gotten for free from a friend over the tops of the heads. Everyone loved them. The sheer material had a much more realistic see through look then just a sheet. At night, you couldn’t see the rod so it looked like these ghosts were floating 10 feet up in the air.

   7. Start the day after Halloween to prepare for next year. If your kids get a bunch of plastic spiders when they go trick or treating, save them and add them to the decoration box. If your child dressed as a pumpkin this year, save the costume, stuff it next year and set it out with the decorations. Try to think of ways to incorporate any old costumes into your decorations.

CRAZINESS

 ♥

This is how I felt yesterday!

If you happened to stop in anytime yesterday afternoon, you may have found that you were not able to find me at all. I think I wore out two separate tech dudes yesterday. I know that my phone and my computer were working overtime and needed a long while to cool down after yesterday’s fiasco.

I have been wanting to shorten the name of this blog for some time now, but became panicky everytime I read the directions for the process. While trying to log in to back up my database (a task I have never tried before), I found that it would not accept my password, so after several attempts I succumbed to asking the hosting company for assistance. In the conversation, I explained what I was trying to do after the back-up was complete and expressed great fear over the task at hand. The first tech dude, Nick (who has a great sense of humor),  was kind enough to walk me through the process….with the phone call being well over an hour long. He made it seem so-o-o-O-O easy.

Voila! The page had been moved! I was embarrassed that I-#1 had been so afraid to begin with..and #2 that I had fervently expressed my concerns that you could not “just move” the files without Wordpress being downloaded already.

Everything looked wonderful.–I was extremely pleased with the outcome…until…..hmmmm…..an hour later when I was changing everything with Entrecard. I opened my page in Internet Explorer, rather than Firefox….and OH…..My……Everlovin’…..GOSH! The formating was gone….I couldn’t log in…..I couldn’t read the comments……sidebars were all over the place.

Sweat became raindrops off my brow. My stomach felt as though I had eaten a huge ball of clay. Now What????

I tried to restore to the old address, but no luck….I tried to open from another control panel….again…not happenin’. So off to the new tech dude…Josh. Josh was so polite…and kept apologizing for putting me on hold. It was very difficult to explain what Nick and I had previously done and poor Josh was dealing with a tech-illiterate dummie….ME.  I won’t bore you with full details, but I will say that I was on the phone for almost two hours….AND…we found out that Wordpress needed to be uploaded first. At 6:40 last night, we were back in business! Poor Josh…I could tell by his voice that he was getting worn down….but never once did he make me feel stupid…and he was a picture of perfect politeness til the very end. Thank you Josh!

I need to send thanks to my friend, Anita, at Prairie Dreams for her calming online banter through the second tech call yesterday. With sheer panic in my heart, I instant messaged her with….”can I throw an online tantrum?” ….expressing my concern that I may had lost everything.  Anita is such a good friend and really helped me keep my panic to a minimum all the times Josh placed me on hold. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Anita!

i have been absent lately…absent minded…not present…otherwise engaged…

~take your pick~

in addition to busy-ness of general life back in school….volleyball games…additional college courses…and the constant remodeling going on at our house….

we have also had to contend with …

…illnesses, injury, physical therapy, a friend/doctor finding that she had a tumor in her kidney and said kidney being removed a few short days later,  mom in law in the hospital, chasing down lost eBay packages, and….. DD2’s college athletic scholarship for next year suddenly being pulled (on her birthday no less)…

…..and today’s dilemma????….

…my house is filled from one end to another with garage sale items… for tomorrow’s city- wide sale …and we are receiving glorious rain….and are expected to continue with on and off thunderstorms through tomorrow…but you see?… i don’t have a garage…that is very low on the to-do list around here….

so…

… my gratitude is sincere for the rain…we have gone so long without any….

however….

what in the world do I do with all of these boxes?

eBay Fraudulent Emails

August 12th, 2008

Maybe this isn’t the place to present this, but I just had a pretty significant scare in regardings to one of my eBay selling accounts. I must preface this with I consider myself somewhat savvy in the ways of criminals and that I have been accused of being too suspicious on more than one occasion. That said, this morning I almost made a huge error. In fact, if it had not been for my computer telling me to not trust this site, I would not have given it much further thought.

I have a few items for sell on eBay. This morning as I was checking the email account associated with my eBay account, I found a question about an SAT book I have listed in my auctions. Now, I must add here that I just recently sold a another prep book on eBay for which the (Canadian)purchaser filed a dispute for not receiving the book within 5 days of payment. This new question on the second book at first, and second, glance appeared to have come from eBay, but I could not find the info in my eBay account.  Based on the other sale, I thought that eBay was experiencing some kind of tech difficulties. Somewhat annoyed, I decided to go ahead and respond to the question through the regular email. When I clicked on the respond now button, (thank goodness) my computer told me that the destination was a phishing site.

After going back to look at the official looking email again, I realized that there was one tiny, tiny difference…the return address was “ebey.com” rather than “ebay.com”. If my computer had not caught the attempted fraud, I would have gone to a site and typed in my password so that I could access my account.

I know some of you sell on eBay, so I thought it best to get this particular scam out there. It is so much different than any of the many that I have received in the past.
